I always say “when you choose public office, you serve where needed”
I always say “when you choose public office, you serve where needed”. Today, that responsibility extends to a new chapter: one of international public service and one that is particularly close to my heart.
I am honored to be appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as the UN Under-Secretary-General & Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
I take on this responsibility with great humility and a deep sense of purpose, especially as this appointment comes at a critical global moment with significant economic implications, particularly for Member States.
The ongoing war poses monumental challenges and severe impacts on energy markets, trade, and supply chains, with far-reaching consequences for economic and social strategies and plans. In this context, ESCWA’s role in supporting urgent economic and social policy responses and regional cooperation is more critical than ever; guided by its vision “Shared Prosperity, Dignified Life”.
Having worked closely with the UN as a key partner during my years as a Minister in the Egyptian Cabinet, it is a profound honor to now serve within the UN system itself, contributing directly to its mission at a regional and global level.
I look forward to working closely with Member States, partners, and stakeholders to deliver impact where it is most needed, with full commitment, a shared sense of purpose and clear focus on results.
